Some like it, some not so much – Austin Texas is one of the hottest place to live in the country! One side effect of the heat besides your air conditioning bill is the impact it has on your auto glass.
You might think the direct heat is the issue, but what really affects glass with both hot and cold weather is the changes in temmperature. Glass expands and contracts with the temperature which can cause issues. Gradual changes aren’t a problem as the glass is designed to handle that – what becomes a challenge is when there are sudden swings in temperature And as anybody who lives in Texas knows, there can be some REALLY fast swings in temperature!
One culprit is actually driver caused. When you get in your car after it’s been sitting in the hot sun and then crank up the AC, the glass is exposed to a quick change in temperature. In Texas it’s natural for us to do this, so it happens all the time – sometimes multiple times a day! Over time this can lead to weakness in the glass, and eventually can cause a crack in the windshield, side windows, or can lead to leaks in the seals caused by the expansion and contraction of the glass.
By gradually lowering the temperature, you can help avoid some of these problems by reducing the stress on your auto glass. Lowering your windows to release the hot air and allowing your glass to adjust gradually before turning on your AC can help.
